DEGREMONT-GDF SUEZ, embarks on an ethical certification process

1. Organizational Governance

Strategy and organization

Context

DEGREMONT, a SUEZ Environnement subsidiary, is an international water treatment specialist. Its teams design, build, and commission drinking water and desalination facilities, municipal wastewater treatment plants, and sludge treatment facilities for local communities.  In 2008, DEGREMONT formalized its CSR commitment by being audited by the certifying body GoodCorporation.

Objectives

  •  Reaffirm the company’s commitment to an ethical, responsible approach.
  • Formalize this commitment through an external audit of its activities

APPROACH

GoodCorporation is an independent  certifying body created in London in 2000 to evaluate corporate ethics and social responsibility. GoodCorporation standards (established in 2001 and amended in 2007 in cooperation with the Institute of Business Ethics) are based on a series of 65 questions concerning 7 areas of CSR:

- Employees (job conditions, health and safety, compensation, diversity)
- Customers (transparency of information, labeling, product quality)
- Suppliers (respect for procedures, responsible practices)
- Environment (existence of impact studies and measurements)
- Shareholders (transparency and communication)
- Commitment of management

Each question receives a score between 1 and 5 based on the level of commitment (existence of a policy, evaluation system, documents, consultation of stakeholders). Accreditation certifies that no area of non-compliance was found in any of the 65 questions.

GoodCorporation completes its assessment by verifying that the company’s own principles are being applied. For GDF Suez, this means, in particular, application by each entity of Group charters (ethics and environmental charters).

DEGREMONT was the first GDF Suez entity to be audited on its overall policy and construction and operation activities in France: more than 100 telephone or face-to-face interviews were conducted.  During the follow-up audit in June of 2009, DEGREMONT received accreditation as a good corporate citizen by Good Corporation for its overall policies and its activities in France.
