APPROACH

In 2000, Luminox launched a Life Cycle Assessment of its products in association with ADEME. It is aiming at minimizing environmental impacts, from the raw material itself to the manufacturing, the use and the recycling of the product at the end of its life.

The method enables the company to choose the components and materials (lights, plastic, batteries and packaging) that are less polluting, that induce less energy, and are less difficult to recycle. But the company is mainly involved in reducing the energy the various lighting fixtures consume. The lighting fixtures called « Planète » are eco-products and require LED lights, cold cathode tubes, electronic, surface-mounted components to make them lighter. The lights have a life cycle that is 7 years long (instead of a year on average for the other products).

The product was launched in 2003. It is more expensive but the cost overrun is offset within 3 years thanks to energy and maintenance savings. The company has implemented an innovative marketing approach: the consumers are identified (architects, public services, « green » companies) and colloquiums, specific campaigns are organized.
