ROQUETTE bases its approach and its commitments in terms of CSR on 4 major types of capital

1. Organizational Governance

Strategy and organization

Context

Roquette is a French group whose business is that of processing plant-based raw materials. Its human wealth is made up of more than 8,000 employees around the world and represents a true cultural diversity. Since 2008, Roquette is committed to promote sustainable development (CSR approach) and its deployment at each of its sites, at all levels of the company. It is progressively constructing its approach and its commitment to CSR.

Roquette is a French Group, with an industrial presence on 3 continents with 21 production sites in 2015.

Objectives

  • To enrich the Group's strategy with sustainable development
  • To accompany the transformation program while addressing the challenges the Group must face in terms of sustainability
  • To see to it that the economic performance, the social cohesion and the preservation of the environment are harmoniously balanced in the company's choices.

APPROACH

In 2012, a work group gathering various functions of the Group and led by Bruno Rebelle, CEO of Transitions (Agency for Strategy, Engineering and Communication in Sustainable Development) was created to reflect on the contribution of sustainable development to the company's strategy.

The Group's approach to sustainable development, developed within the framework of this collaborative study, addresses the challenges the Group must face in terms of sustainability: limit the environmental impact of the Group's activity, respond to the expectations of stakeholders, and develop skills and adapt them to the Group's strategic ambitions for international development while optimizing the profitability and solidity of the company.

The Group has chosen to translate its commitment around four major areas: Natural Capital, Material & Industrial Capital, Human Capital, and Societal Capital and go ahead in 2015 to define major changes in the firm.

Certain of these types of capital are limited, in the sense that all resources on which they are founded are by nature “finite”. This is the case for Natural Capital and Material & Industrial Capital. However, Human Capital and Societal Capital are, in essence, infinite types of capital (for example, there are no limits to the development of human relationships).

This representation of CSR in four types of capital, inspired from the work of the Finnish researcher, Anti Hautamäki, seeks to take into account the major challenges facing businesses, both internal and external, such as population growth and food demand, climate change and increased energy needs.

In line with the Roquette Group’s values of “Respect, Trust, Solidarity,” the ultimate goal of its Sustainable Development approach is the long-term viability of the company. This goal is based on the preservation and development of these four types of capital.
