Sustainable management of forest resources of Asia Pulp & Paper (APP)

4. Environment

Biodiversity and sustainable resource management

Context

Established in 1972 - APP is one of the world’s largest pulp-and-paper company, producing tissue, packaging and paper. APP sells to customers in 120 countries, producing 19 million tons per annum.
In 2012, APP launched its CSR policy called “Roadmap Vision 2020” addressing issues from reforestation to human rights. This policy was launched to answer huge public pressure and several incidents to challenge APP legitimacy in business operations.

Objectives

  • SVLK (Indonesian Timber Legality Assurance System) – to be recognized by importing customers
  • Improve brand image against accusations of illegal logging and rainforest clearing
  • Develop sustainable forestry

APPROACH

1) APP and its pulpwood suppliers will only develop areas that are not forested, as identified through independent High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS) assessments

2) APP will support the Government of Indonesia’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through protection of forested peatland and implementation of best practices in peatland management

3) APP and its pulpwood suppliers will implement best practices in community engagement, which include the Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) principles, to avoid and resolve social conflicts across its pulpwood supply chain in Indonesia.

4) APP will develop measures to ensure that the sources for its imported pulp support responsible forest management. Over the past decade, the Company and APP have built and implemented a broad-ranging sustainability strategy to preserve critical aspects of Indonesia’s precious natural resources and biodiversity
