PROSIGN developed a natural road marking product

4. Environment

Green design

Context

In France, road marking companies use more than 33,000t products a year, and more than a half of these products are made with petrochemical substances. The use of harmful substances has made it necessary to clean up industrial sites; it proved to be very costful.

Objectives

-    Avoiding to clean up industrial sites

-    Respecting environment

-    Using natural and efficient solvents

APPROACH

10 years research were necessary to develop a new, natural and efficient product. An environmental assessment was carried out. The Life Cycle Assessment showed that the new road marking paint did not induce transfers of pollution.

In 2002, the marketing and communications department based its campaign on the fact that the products were eco-friendly, and used the scientific findings of the LCA. In spite of the fact that the purchase cost is superior to that of classical paints, the selling points draw out the reduction in indirect costs : there is waste-reducing packaging, there is less waste and above all, the life cycle of the product is longer and less quantity is required when using it.

An information and training policy about environment and eco-conception was implemented within the company for the whole hierarchy.
