RédGES: RABOT DUTILLEUL reduced its greenhouse gas emissions

4. Environment

Energy / Greenhouse Gases (GHG)

Context

Rabot Dutilleul Group is a complete player in the construction industry, with expertise in the development, construction and maintenance of buildings. As part of the RedGES plan (Reduction of Greenhouse Gas – GHG) the Group intends to significantly reduce its emissions of GHG for 2050. Ambitious, yes, but quite feasible thanks to the Group's strategy that calls for emphasizing renovation of the real estate portfolio.

Objectives

While continuing to pursue economic growth initiatives, the objective here is to convert the supply, which for now is basically oriented towards new construction, into an activity of renovating and remodeling the real estate portfolio. This shift will result in savings of:
  • Energy, by improving heat insulation.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions tied to the production of building materials, by preserving underlying building structures.
With such a change, which implies a new direction for the building trades, a certain amount of inertia will persist before noticeably bending the carbon emissions curve down.

APPROACH

In 2011, for the first time, Rabot Dutilleul calculated its carbon footprint in order to assess the impact of its activity on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This carbon balance audit was repeated in 2012 and 2013 in all of the Group’s corporate entities and worksites using an even more stringent methodology.

Although concrete is the main source of GHG, it is not the only one. So the audit also covered the materials purchased, the energy consumed on worksites and throughout a building’s life-cycle and the transport of persons. The focus on the traceability of flows provided the Group with numerous indicators, which are now monitored over time as part of the RédGES* plan.

The aim is to reduce GHG emissions fourfold by 2050. One of the key factors of success will be to increase the share of property renovation work.

This best practice was noticed in 2011 by the World Forum Lille and updated in 2014.
