TOYOTA ONNAING : green, clean, lean

1. Organizational Governance

Strategy and organization

Context

Yaris production site in Onnaing (59-France) was designed and built for environmental performance. The site is considering environment preservation as a major strategic development axis. In production terms, this involves saving natural resources and reducing the activities’ impact on the environment.

Objectives

Minimise the site’s impact on the environment

APPROACH

Toyota’s star-shaped manufacturing site in Onnaing is 17 hectares in ground surface. It was designed to fit requested industrial needs in the barest manner. In some workshops the level of goods-in-progress is 5 to 10 times lower than what is usual in the automobile sector, taking account of production capacity. The site was integrated into its landscape in order to lessen inconvenience to neighbouring residents; the building is low and plain and surrounded by embankments to contain noise.

In order to minimize the plant’s impact on the environment, TMMF is equipped with:
-       over 500,000 returnable packagings for components’ logistics used back and forth between the plant and its suppliers
-       a waste collection area in order to convert 100% waste
-       an autonomous waste water treatment station with both a physicochemical and a biological treatment process, treating an annual volume equivalent to the consumption of a 15,000 inhabitants community (40% of used water is reused internally).
-       Regenerative Thermal Oxidisers to incinerate all volatile organic compounds emitted through solvent-based paint application on car bodies and plastic parts
-       Two rainwater tanks for a total 16,594sqm (6,209 and 10,385sqm respectively) in order to collect and use rainwater
-       Rotary heat exchangers transferring to incoming cold outside air calories from outgoing inside air
-       Temperature and airflow regulators in painting booths with a high-performance calculator
-       An adiabatic chiller to minimize energy needed in order to maintain equipment at proper temperature
-       A photo-cell membrane on the roof (partnership with EDF Energies Nouvelles)
-       A solar wall

One in five in the world, the Toyota Onnaing site was named “sustainable plant” by Toyota Motor Corporation (group headquarters in Japan) in December 2007. This makes the Onnaing site an industrial reference in environment performance in the eyes of TMC. This nomination comes as recognition for the Onnaing site’s successive achievements in environmental matters.
