Waste management good practices – CASTORAMA STORE GUIDE

4. Environment

Waste management

Context

With 102 stores dedicated to home improvement, Castorama is engaged towards zero waste (95% recycled waste in 2020. This approach to zero waste is part of global NET POSITIVE roadmap where Castorama will end up by designing new products made of recycled waste. Castorama is committed to help customers to realize their projects “ better homes, better lives”.

Objectives

  • 2013 target is 80% recycled waste and 2020 target 95% recycled waste.
  • We want to generate value from recycling revenues and avoid landfill charges.

APPROACH

CSR Environment team collected waste management initiatives from store logistic managers, initiatives with proven efficiency. Each initiative has been assessed in terms of value on cost saving and recycled waste ratio. To gather a maximum of stores initiatives CSR Environment team used Intranet Planet Positive blog and regional meetings with store logistic managers.  Castorama waste management store guide gives standard framework for bins layout and alternative framework when small space is required. 20 good practices on organisation, communication and waste streams reporting are described. Cost saving from increased recycling and reduced waste to landfill are identified. There are indeed some writing and lay-out costs for a 22 pages manual (less than 8 000€), but main issue is to share and communicate these 20 good practices and get them part of daily work.

A huge benefit of this project is to make visible operational store managers.

Visits of the waste management facilities are organized to see physically what happen to your own cardboard, wood or metal bins.
