COFELY Services proposes the use of local energy for Lambersart's district heating

Construction

Context

Cofely Services, a GDF-SUEZ Group subsidiary, designs sustainable solutions enabling clients to: reduce energy consumption, improve economic performance, and mitigate environmental impacts. The municipality of Lambersart in Northern France and the housing developer Vilogia have combined efforts to create an extensive district heating network throughout the region. This City-Developer partnership has taken the form of a private-public venture, called "GIP Lambersart Energie 2020". Cofely Services, as the designated public service concessionaire, proposed to the GIP entity a central boiler room supplied by a local energy source: wood.

Objectives

  • This project is primarily intended to maintain users' ability to lower their thermal loads. The 7.7-km long network will serve 1,600 dwelling unit equivalents and supply public-sector facilities, thereby lowering CO2 emissions by 71,000 tons.

APPROACH

The impetus behind this project was provided by both the municipality and the developer Vilogia.A City-Developer joint venture has thus made it possible to utilize the boiler room and Vilogia's existing network, in sharing opinions regarding subsequent facility extensions (wood boiler, heat pump, etc.) with the aim of limiting heating-related costs. The public service delegation agreement for the Lambersart District Heating network, signed on January 25th, officially initiated this partnership between the municipality and Cofely Services.- Cofely Services' commitment favors: high-quality urban integration (the architecture of these new facilities will blend in perfectly with the existing urban landscape); a minimal impact created by the new boiler installation (no noise nuisance for local residents thanks to extremely efficient insulation materials); and various levels of safety (the network will release only very slight pollution, well within the limits established in the strictest standards). Best practice spotted by the World Forum Lille in 2013.

CONTRIBUTION TO COMPANY PERFORMANCE

  • A project that falls within the scope of the Group's energy management policy
  • A practical action illustrating the Group's commitment to the goal of energy transition.

Benefits

  • Anticipated results: preventing the emission of more than 71,000 tons of CO2 overall
  • A 7.7-km long distribution network to supply municipal buildings, schools, clinics / healthcare centers, etc.
  • Service provided to 1,600 dwelling unit equivalents as well as several public facilities
  • 1st extension underway between April and September 2013, with the 2nd extension scheduled for April-November 2014.
