BONDUELLE preserves natural resources and limits the waste induced by its industry

4. Environment

Energy / Greenhouse Gases (GHG)

Context

A family business founded in 1853, Bonduelle holds the ambition of becoming the "world leader in ensuring good health through a vegetable-based diet". However, producingvegetables needs a large amount of water and energy and produces significantvolumes of organic by-products to be processed (peel, water for washing, cooking or pressing juices, plant residues etc.). The Bonduelle Group has setitself ambitious targets to reduce the impact of its industrial activity on theenvironment.

Objectives

  • Reducing the consumption of water and energy
  • Treating over 90% ofthe liquid discharge from its production with its own installations
  • Encouraging theselective sorting and recycling of organic by-products and industrial residues

APPROACH

Combining innovative technology and raising of awareness

Bonduelle manages to save natural resources through innovative technical solutions combined with campaigns to raise awareness about limiting consumption in the group's various entities. Management instructions or corrective measures are implemented if there are any excesses.
  • Energy
In the north of France, at Estrées-Mons, a factory is powered by steam from a cogeneration wood boiler. The aim is to power the factory 60% with biomass-powered steam which will save 15,000 TEQ CO2 per year.
  • Water
The company controls and optimises its use of water in order to strike a balance between moderation, hygiene and product quality. The introduction of medium-pressure cleaning tools makes it possible, for example, to reduce water consumption.

Processing waste and effluent

Green waste is recycled in various ways: fertilisation (3%), animal feed (88%), compost (8%), and energy (1%). 78% of non-hazardous industrial waste is recycled. Bonduelle is committed to the production of alternative energies (biogas) from its industrial effluents.

Optimising packaging
Bonduelle is working on reducing the thickness of its tins and on analysing the value of plastic films and complex packaging, in order to reduce its carbon footprint.
