A day of solidarity action organized each year at KPMG

7. Community involvement

Community development

Context

Aware of its responsibilities, KPMG commits itself in civil actions, both for the protection of the environment as well as in the workplace and society. This is reflected in the Northern region of France by an annual day where teams of the firm rally on the theme "pay attention to your environment"

Objectives

Engaging employees around solidarity projects which are concrete examples of the values KPMG wishes to promote.

APPROACH

The firm provides to a local association a team of employees to volunteer for a day of citizenship action.
This day of action is the result of several months of planning by a steering committee made up of employees. This committee selects the project, the local partner and provides the logistics of the day. The project identified and quantified is then presented to the KPMG Foundation.

New in 2010: participation in this day of solidarity was proposed to all staff of KPMG.

Over the past 4 years, the following projects were completed:

- 2012: Accompaniment of residents from the Béthune-based EHPAD facility for the elderly during a daylong Lille discovery visit. Once seniors have taken up residence at a convalescent facility, they often lose contact with the outside world. The main purpose of this one-day excursion was to set the stage for more intense human contact through dialogue and sharing. KPMG's participants assisted EHPAD personnel in supervising this group of elderly residents during a guided tour of Lille and the city zoo.
- 2011: Participation in site restoration sponsored by the Red Cross' Medical and Educational Institute in Saint Jans Cappel following a Sapifestival music festival organized by the Bouche à Oreilles association. Composed of special education professionals with a passion for music, this association pursues a mission of promoting interactions between the Institute and local residents. Participants involved in this daylong effort helped disassemble the site's big top tents, remove barricades fencing off the festivities and collect accumulated waste, all within a single day compared to the one month event organizers would typically spend.
- 2010: Renovation and maintenance work in a Red Cross EMI which houses children and adults with behavioral disorders. Participants on this day cleaned the grounds, painted children's rooms, woodwork, garages to make this place more liveable.
- 2009: renovation of part of a housing and reformation center of the Salvation Army Foundation of Lille. Volunteers have cleaned and repainted about ten rooms with the help of resident
- 2008: preparation of the natural site of Mont Noir (Black Mountain) in order to hold a cultural festival: waste collection, disposal of the residue from mowing and trimming shrubs planted in 2007 to form a hedge
- 2007: rehabilitation of an old pheasantry in its natural space in the Beugin woods (62), classified as a Sensitive Natural Space, with the help of the Eden association 62. The employees have dismantled henhouses, have carted off, disposed of, and sorted out the collected waste; and have cleared the undergrowth from the brambles.
