HEINEKEN takes action to tackle risks in the workplace

3. Labor relations / working conditions

Workplace health and safety

Context

Established in Amsterdam over 150 years ago, HEINEKEN has 1,300 employees and three breweries in France located in Mons-en-Baroeul (59), Marseille (13) and Schiltigheim (67). The HEINEKEN brewery in Mons-en-Baroeul is now the group’s main French brewery in terms of volume brewed and jobs.

In 2009 HEINEKEN was the first brewer in France to publish a Sustainable Development report on its “Brewing a better world” initiative, which aims to protect water resources, reduce CO2 emissions, source sustainably, encourage responsible alcohol consumption, promote the health and safety of its employees and encourage community commitment.

Objectives

  • Guarantee the health and safety of employees with the aim of a zero accident rate
  • Encourage good safety practice
  • Make employees aware of what is dangerous behaviour

APPROACH

HEINEKEN is developing a prevention plan for each brewery and communicating it to staff to make them aware of the possible accidents that can occur in their particular job. The company is making them key players in this initiative by involving them in the reporting of high-risk situations.

To avoid high-risk behaviour, a number of measures have been put in place:

        - The “STOP” behavioural audit programme (preventive observation), which requires workplace behaviour (the wearing of personal protective equipment, workstation posture, etc.) to be analysed for a 20-minute period.

  • This encourages good safety practice and raises awareness among employees of dangerous behaviour. This initiative is also applicable to external companies who visit the site (e.g. hauliers);

        - “Safety Challenges” encourages employees to be key players in the initiative and the best suggestions are rewarded (book tokens, gift vouchers, etc.).

  • Example: a safety rail was installed at the edge of the fluid tank after it was identified as a fall risk and reported by an employee.

At the Mons-en-Baroeul brewery, security at the site is a fundamental issue:

            - A weekly meeting is held by a cross-disciplinary team to identify risks within the framework of the TPM (Total Productive Management) initiative;
            - There are safety signs informing staff of the code of good conduct and visitors must complete a safety quiz before being allowed on site;
            - Team meetings always start with a quick safety briefing

In 2014, the brewery organised a dedicated Safety Day during which production was put on hold so that everyone could attend.

  • 250 participants were made aware of the risks, mainly regarding falls and slips, with the emphasis on understanding the consequences of an accident.

CONTRIBUTION TO COMPANY PERFORMANCE

At the Mons-en-Baroeul brewery in 2014:

  • There were over 1,000 preventive observations;
  • More than 400 “near-accidents” were recorded – situations in which employees were almost injured but where the accident was avoided.

Benefits

  • An improvement in the safety, health and working conditions of employees.
