Strategy and organization

Context

JC David, founded in 1973 and located in the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, is the market leader in sea salting. The company is essentially known for its two flagship products: herring and haddock. Thanks to its history and its traditional know-how, the company is recognized for the quality of its products.

JC David makes its CSR approach a fundamental pillar. Indeed, the respect of tradition, the fair sharing of natural resources and the responsible protection of the environment are essential elements.

Objectives

  • Become an actor of sustainable consumption
  • Perpetuate the traditional know-how that defines the establishment
  • To promote the territory and contribute to the preservation of nature

APPROACH

JC David's CSR approach is global and goes from supply to distribution. This is why its business is sustainable in several aspects:

  • First of all, the raw materials used by the establishment are from sustainable fisheries: this means that the natural underwater world is respected and the economic prosperity of the people who depend on fishing for a living is preserved.
  • Plastic packaging for products sold by JC David is gradually being replaced by glass jars to facilitate recycling. Today, 44% of the company's products are packaged without plastic.
  • The fish sold by the brand are smoked with PEFC-labeled wood from nearby state forests. The establishment does not use electricity in the smokehouses.
  • JC David is working to preserve ancestral trades that do not exist in schools, such as the trade of master smoker or salter. To do this, training and the transmission of artisanal know-how are at the heart of their approach. The company also helps people in professional reintegration by giving them access to a sustainable job within the structure.

CONTRIBUTION TO COMPANY PERFORMANCE

  • 44% of the company's products are packaged without plastic: this generates a considerable reduction of the carbon footprint
  • All the fish come from sustainable fisheries and are MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified
  • The brand is recognized and acclaimed for its commitment to the environment

Benefits

  • The brand contributes to the preservation of natural resources
  • Reduction of the carbon footprint
  • Preservation of traditional skills and crafts
